Premiere Pro Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are essential for efficient editing in Premiere. Here’s a list useful keyboard shortcuts Most of them are set in Premiere by default.

*Italicized shortcuts are ones I have custom set in my version of Premiere. Go to Premiere Pro – Keyboard Shortcuts to add custom shortcuts.

Workspace

Great shortcuts for switching between windows without the mouse.

Function Keyboard Shortcut What does it do?
Project Panel Shift + 1 Access all your project resources
Source Monitor Shift + 2 Reviewing footage to go on timeline
Timeline/Sequence Panel Shift + 3 Edit sequences
Program Monitor Shift + 4 Current edit
Effects Controls Shift + 5 Make adjustments to effects you have added to clips
Effects Shift + 7 Opens effects window so you can add effects to clips
Audio Clip Mixer Shift + 9 Window for fine autio edits
Make Window Full Screen ~ Makes highlighted workspace full screen

Organization at the beginning is crucial to a seamless editing process. Spend the time now, so you aren’t stressing later.

Import media Cmd+I Imports footage and other media assets
Rename files Option + R Rename files something more relevant you can search for.
Label Media Use number keys to label media with color1. Violet (1)2. Iris (2)3. Caribbean (3)4. Lavender (4)5. Cerulean (5)6.
Forest (6)7. Rose (7)8. Mango (8)

Reviewing and Selecting Footage

Use keyboard shortcuts to quickly go through footage in thes ource monitor.

Function Keyboard Shortcut What does it do?
Mark In I Sets the in point
Mark Out O Sets the out point
Insert , Drops selection in sequence
Overwrite . Overwrites with selection
Play in Reverse J Rewind
Pause K Pause
Fast Forward L Fast forward or increase spead of footage as you watch it.
Make subclip Cmd + U Creates subclip in project panel from footage

Editing in the Timeline

Tools for quick sequence edits

Function Keyboard Shortcut What does it do?
Selection Tool V Arrow/selection tool
Razor Tool C For making cuts, click Cmd+K to make a cut at the playhead, while using the razor tool.
Ripple Tool B For changing the length of the sequence
Roll Tool N Changes in and out points of two clips but not the duration of the sequence
Slip Tool Y For editing multiple clips without changing the duration of the sequence
Slide Tool U For editing three clips. Middle clip stays the same
Track Select Forward Tool A Selects clips quickly so you can move the whole sequence down

Editing

Jump betweeb edit points Up and Down arrows Move playhead to next or previous edit point
Make a cut Cmd + K wiht razor tool at playhead Makes a cut at current playhead
Add keyframe Cmd + Click Creates keyframe on selected clip
Default video transition Cmd + D Applies default video transition (you can set the default)
Audio transition between two clips Cmd + Shift + D Audio transition between two clips
Adjust audio gain G Make adjustments to audio gain
Titles Cmd + T Create titles
Expand tracks Cmd+= Expands tracks for better control of edits
Zooms in at playhead = Zooms in wherever playhead is
Zooms out at playhead - Zooms out wherever playhead is
